Xerox WorkCentre 3220/DN is a machine for printing, scanning, and sending faxes over a network; It works as a standalone copier, fax machine, and sender of e-mail; and adds an extra touch worth noting. For example, it automatically forwards incoming faxes as e-mail attachments, using TIFF or PDF formats, and this gives you the option of printing faxes before continuing or saving paper and ink by not printing them.

Some additional steps are pretty obvious. For example, the printer comes with two discs-one with drivers and manuals and one with additional software, including programs for document management and optical character recognition. Each disk includes its own installation routine, but the instructions do not even mention the second disk. If you have a disk in hand, it's not hard to know that you have to install it separately, but if you ignore it while unpacking the printer, you probably will never know about programs you did not install.

Installing drivers and related software on the network is a mixed bag. Basic installation is fairly easy, with an automatic installation program running from disk, but the program does not automate everything, and the setup guide does not tell you about additional steps you need to do manually.

Another additional step is more problematic. Before you can use AIO as an e-mail sender, for example, you must use a browser to log in to the built-in printer webpage and set this feature. The information you need to do that-including the default login name and password is hidden inside the user manual that exists only as a PDF file. The lack of printed user guides is a small matter by itself. Even more important, though, is there is no installation guide to show that the feature exists or that you need to install it, let alone tell you where to find the setup instructions.
