Xerox WorkCentre C2424 as a multifunction printer that can handle large office heavy workflow. WorkCentre has more features, more flexibility, and more network functionality than any other offer. Installing WorkCentre on a server-based network is quick and easy. First, I connect C2424 to the ethernet hub and install the software and drivers on the server running Windows Server 2003. After setting up the IP address, I can access the Web network management page, from where I can contact the driver and install it easily on the client running Windows XP.

Xerox includes an excellent Web-based network management tool on its servers, including alphabetical indexes and links to all functions. Its Web page provides information about paper trays, output trays, page counts, inventory status, and routine maintenance. You can also take detailed notes on various jobs, print a configuration page, set up scan configurations, and store user profiles. General system unit management is in public folders, but you can configure web pages either as public or private folders, set up passwords and assign administrative tasks to folders that are only accessible to authorized users. You can also troubleshoot, take diagnostic logs, and see comprehensive guides that offer tips on how to improve print quality and resolve printing issues.

You can copy from a button in the console; reduce or enlarge; lighten or darken; set the number of copies; and select from copy options like creating booklets, copy from multiple pages to one page, and include an empty separator. Unfortunately, the unit's photocopier output is no better than the printout. C2424 is on the lowest list for copy quality, copying text pages very easily so that bold is not printed at all. It copied the page in 4.1 seconds (roughly the average for the MFP tested for our July 2005 issue roundup).

The multi-feature print driver provides an option to let you know when your work is done, settings for secure printing, and troubleshooting sections highlighted by PrintingScout, a tool that alerts you if there are any issues that arise in your print job before you send them. The default configuration has two paper trays with a total capacity of 625 sheets, and you can add two more paper trays for a maximum of 1675 sheets.
